Recently it came to my attention that Loki sees the world as having only two seasons, both of which are a bottomless pit of deliciousness.
Hey Furfriends!! How do you show your Sports fandom?!!!
Of all the paparazzi snaps I've taken of Loki Doberdog, very few have been at night.unless you count the night of the exploding transformer. The weather has also been a tad unwelcoming as of late for bare-hands, as it's been minus thirty below this week. Night walks are quite therapeutic, and many of my best reflections happen when the moon is out, especially under the lonely yet peaceful blanket that is winter. On a similar note, I found this essay about "street sauntering" by Virginia Woolf Street Haunting: A London Adventure "The hour should be the evening and the season winter, for in winter the champagne brightness of the air and the sociability of the streets are grateful" Here are some photos of Loki in snowy champagne brightness, with accompanying quotes from the 1927 piece. "How beautiful a street is in winter! It is at once revealed and obscured. Here vaguely one can trace symmetrical straight avenues of doors and windows; here under the lamps are floating islands of pale light" "The evening hour, too, gives us the irresponsibility which darkness and lamplight bestow. We are no longer quite ourselves." For the eye has this strange property: it rests only on beauty; like a butterfly it seeks color and basks in warmth. On a winter’s night like this, when nature has been at pains to polish and preen herself, it brings back the prettiest trophies We are reminded; high among the bare trees are hung oblong frames of reddish yellow light—windows; there are points of brilliance burning steadily like low stars—lamps; this empty ground, which holds the country in it and its peace, is only a London square, set about by offices and houses where at this hour fierce lights burn over maps, over documents, over desks where clerks sit turning with wetted forefinger the files of endless correspondences; Passing, glimpsing, everything seems accidentally but miraculously sprinkled with beauty...with no thought of buying, the eye is sportive and generous; it creates; it adorns; it enhances. Only motor–cars are abroad at this hour, and one has a sense of emptiness, of airiness, of secluded gaiety. To escape is the greatest of pleasures; street haunting in winter the greatest of adventures. Is there an essay or a poem that could be illustrated with pictures of your adventures? I propose a blog challenge, if you're up for it, take Loki's lead and dogument your own! (doesn't have to be weather related, great way to share literature)
Nightie night! The biggest and best decision we made in 2012 was to Adopt. Growing up, we always adopted adult or mature dogs who were lovingly given a new lease on life in our home. In adulthood, once you wake up with that flicker in your heart that says "it's time for a dog, I'm ready" it very soon becomes a fever that you just can't shake. Your heart feels and knows that there's something missing, and that something has four paws, a wagging tail and a panting energy that only dogs can bestow upon a household. If you've known that feeling in your childhood, it resurrects itself later in life, no question. After a year of researching, learning about the realities, reading blogs, pining, living vicariously through others, browsing and preparing, it was time, my teeming heart could stand it no more (and neither could patient Doberdad, my supportive friends and family....did I mention there was a lot of pining?) People say when it comes to dogs, you always end up the one you were meant to be with because of the things they teach you about life, and vice-versa. I found solace with this philosophy and carried this notion in my search. And then there was Loki. I picture him essentially being Annie from the 1982 cinematic musical. Only he's a doberdog. You could recast the entire show with dogs, and switch up a few lyrics. Is that weird? Loki in his kennel at the shelter: Maybe far away, Or maybe real near by. He may be pouring her coffee. She may be straightening his tie. Maybe in a house, All hidden by a hill. She's sitting playing piano. He's sitting playing a bill. Bet you they're young. Bet you they're smart. Bet they collect things like ash trays and art. Bet you they're good. Why shouldn’t they be? Their one mistake was giving up me….. So.....maybe now its time And maybe it’s when I wake They'll be there calling me baby Maybe….. Bet you he reads. Bet you she sews. Maybe she's made me a closet of bones. Maybe they're strict, As straight as a line. Don’t really care as long as they're mine….. So…..maybe now this prayer's, The last one of its kind Won’t you please, come get your baby? Hard to believe this was the very first time we met. To me, he looks like a completely different dog. It's in the eyes. Apparently, he was overlooked because of his large size, insecurity around other large dogs, and energy level when first greeting new people. Ironically, he settles right down after having a sniff, and curls up into the smallest of circles when at home. The way to a dog's heart is through butt scratches. That's me giving introductory massages. That's him with the expression of confused bliss "Man, this ladygirl is so nice. Better enjoy this while I can because they always leave me behind, but maybe this time it will be different" A million tail-waggy emotions are running through my head, and a million smells are running through his nose during our meet and greet and play and run and play. He would end up following me around the field, bringing me toys, and sitting at my feet while I was on the phone. "I like you ladygirl, can you please look after me for the rest of life please? I'll stay right here. Thanks" This was the best Friday the 13th ever. The day we brought Loki home and learned he looooves the car. "Guys, this is great, ohhh this is so great, omg, where are we going?" And this is what happened a few hours after bringing Loki Doberdog home. If it were the musical, we would have just wrapped up the "I think I'm gonna like it here" number from Annie. Seriously, you all should watch the video but picture Annie as a doberman husky "Zzzzzzzz zzzzz zzzzz Zzzzzz zzzzzzzz blissss" A little confused, but a very brave and happy boy, this is one of the first walks of a trillion thousand we are about to take for the rest of 2012. This is also the first time he realizes that I'm a furious member of the doggerazzi and capture pictures of everything. I assured him I wasn't a stage parent.
The sun'll come out Tomorrow Bet your bottom dollar That tomorrow There'll be sun! Just thinkin' about Tomorrow Clears away the cobwebs, And the sorrow 'Til there's none! When I'm stuck in a day That's gray, And lonely, I just stick out my chin And Grin, And Say, Oh The sun'll come out Tomorrow So ya gotta hang on 'Til tomorrow Come what may Tomorrow! Tomorrow! I love ya Tomorrow! You're always A day A way! Happy New Year to all four leggeds, two leggeds and anything in between :) With more than just a blanket , but a king size duvet of snow now covering the city, I've come to notice the ritualistic activities Loki takes upon himself in his winter wonderland. Here's an account of a few antics, with some likely inner doberlogue. "Are you getting my good side? Badongadoberdonk" The Balancing Act Precariously perched atop snowbanks, he's a teetering mess of limbs and paws. Compelled to conquer the highest of peaks, determined to plant his flag at the summit in the form of a number two, He always gets a 9.8 on the dismount. 7.6 on execution. "Must get it must get it must get it must get it" The Ostrich When his dober-senses tingle from what lies beneath, a seek and destroy mission is immediately deployed. While most tracking dogs do this with a certain pawfessional panache, Loki merely sticks his head in like a stereotypical ostrich in the sand. "Call Doberdog, that's my name, that name again is Doberdog" The Snowshoe A fresh field, a knoll, a hill, or patch of snow means a new territory to fearlessly discover. Loki will trudge through footprintless snow like it's his job to plow it. He doesnt funnel along the conveniently sculpted man-made snowpaths like a sheep, but rather chooses to create his own adjacent dog route. He thinks he's doing other canines a service. Here I am! There I am! Everwhere I am am!!" The Sled Dog Perhaps it's his half-huskiness, perhaps it's his love of the whitestuff, or perhaps he's just like any other dog in wonderfully fun weather. He get's that look in his eyes, and ears, they all go different directions, the tail starts to wiggle and dance, one pounce starts and off he goes to Zoomietown, running and circling, zigzagging, bounding around like a bucking baby donkey. It is my fault, because slowly but surely I'm teaching him "Mush!" and he responds with the ancestral pully-pull of snowbound freedom What are some of YOUR wild and crazies in this quirky weather?
When out on the roof there arose such a clatter There's something to be said about those wonderful people, who may not necessarily be dog folk but still welcome your enormous goofy doberdog to their home during the busiest time of year. We went to Doberdog's Doberdad's mums....dobergrandma's. He was a great house guest and was very interactive with everything and everyone. We arrived just in time for the turkey carving on Christmas eve. He couldn't have been happier to be in a two storey house with the liberty to run around and throw tennis balls at people who were settling down for their first course. He was incredibly spoiled, and even had two stockings. Three arm-length bones, a bunch of cookie treats, and a destroyed squeaky hot dog later, we headed home from our overnight holiday adventure. With five more family gatherings to go, Loki would spend the rest of Christmas day on his ownsome napping....and in no way exploring open gift bags we left under our tree.........Oooops In his doberworld it was soo horribly terrible of us to leave him behind on such a joyous festive day, so he decided to keep his own party going. Merry Ransacking, how do you like them apples? We came home later than aniticpated, to a stocking that had been pried from a gift bag and merrily pillaged, with an open lindor bag of tin foil chocolates and a marshmallow santa package strewn across the floor....the oddest thing about his holiday ransack party was that he didnt actually eat ANY of the chocolate (thank goodness) but instead he went for the apple. We came home to a guilty pupper cowering over an unharmed red delicious. This is my apple. Be careful k? Soon it was clear that the new found red delicious was his pride and joy. He carried it around the house like it was a fragile fruit baby. No chewing. Just gently carrying. I decided to allow the red delicious to accompany us on our late night walk. The only time he put down the apple was in the elevator, but picked it up as soon as we got to ground level. The rest of the walk would look like this. Most dogs carry toys, he carries produce. Yo! Don't forget about your Vitamin C this winter! It's man's bestfriend! birthday card from the ever Hallmarkian, Loki And lastly, as we don't know Loki's actual birth date, I had to guestimate based on his approx. age of 2.5yrs when we adopted him. The city recognizes his birthday as mine for simplicity sake. So happy possible third birthday Loki Doberdog. Welcome to the world of Boxing Day b-days :)
